Overview

This qualification is aimed at those preparing to embark on a career in the sport and leisure Industry, or wish to practically participate in a number of activities. It is a practical, hands-on qualification which are designed to prepare the candidate for work in a multitude of sport and leisure facilities and raise awareness of how and where to participate in sporting opportunities.

This qualification develops the knowledge required for health, safety and risk management, anatomy and physiology for exercise and health, factors affecting participation in sport and physical activity, safeguarding and protecting children and young people in sport, funding and sponsorship, events management for sport and leisure and also involves practical elements to participation in sport such as physical preparation and technical and tactical requirements for sports performance

Knowledge and understanding relating to the qualification:

  • Understand how health and safety legislation applies in the workplace
  • Understand the principles and benefits of providing good customer service in sport and active leisure
  • Understand how to deal with different types of sporting injuries
  • Understand strategies to increase participation in sport and physical activity
  • Understand the impact of success in sport on lifestyle

Skills relating to the qualification:

  • Be able to conduct a risk assessment in a sport and leisure environment
  • Be able to use fitness tests and interpret results
  • Be able to plan, implement and evaluate a programme to support physical preparation for sport
  • Be able to develop a business plan
  • Be able to analyse own techniques and tactics to improve performance

Structure

To achieve the YMCA Level 3 Diploma in Sport, learners must achieve 12 credits from the mandatory units and a
minimum of 26 credits from the optional units available, making a total of 38 credits.

-Portfolio of Evidence
A typical portfolio of evidence could contain:

  • ​evidence index
  • assessor observation – completed observational checklists and related action plans
  • witness testimony
  • candidate’s proof of work
  • worksheets
  • assignments/projects/reports/presentations
  • record of professional discussion
  • record of oral and written questioning
  • candidate and peer reports
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
  • summary of achievement

-Multiple choice examination
The anatomy and physiology unit (A/600/9051) is assessed through an externally set and marked multiple choice assessment.
