    Learners must have completed a qualification endorsed against one of the following CIMSPA professional standards:

    • Gym Instructor
    • Core Group Exercise Instructor
    • Strength and Conditioning (Trainer)

    Overview

    By completing this qualification, existing exercise and fitness instructors can expand their scope of practice to work with larger groups or in additional group exercise disciplines. This qualification meets industry requirements to become a Group Exercise Instructor, as set out within the CIMSPA professional standard.

    The purpose of this qualification is to enable learners to plan, deliver and evaluate group exercise sessions. Learners will study group exercise within one of seven possible disciplines, which will be listed on their certificate.

    Completing this qualification allows learners to access jobs instructing group exercise classes/sessions for their chosen discipline.

    Qualification details

    Learners will cover the following within the context of their chosen group exercise discipline:

    Principles for planning and designing group exercise sessions
    Developing choreography, breaking down and using music
    Planning group exercise sessions
    Preparing to instruct group exercise sessions
    Delivering group exercise sessions
    Reviewing sessions and reflecting on practice

    To achieve the YMCA Level 2 Award in Exercise and Fitness: Group Exercise Instructor (610/2792/3), learners must achieve one discipline specifc unit. Assessments include:

    Session planning documents
    Observation of practical skills
    Self-evaluation

    This qualification is an occupational entry qualification. This means it meets the agreed industry prerequisites to enter the sport and physical activity sector as an employed or self-employed Group Exercise Instructor.
    This qualification can also lead to further training at the same and/or higher level to specialise and further increase scope of practice. For example:
