By completing this qualification, existing fitness instructors will meet industry requirements to work inclusively with older adults.

The purpose this qualification is to provide learners with the knowledge to support healthy ageing through the engagement with physical activity and exercise. This includes building knowledge of other services available to support the diverse health and wellbeing needs of the ageing population.

This qualification will develop knowledge to plan and adapt exercise and physical activity to meet the diverse needs of older adults who are ‘already active and healthy’ and those at ‘early stages of transitioning/declining’ health.

Practitioner status


 

This qualification is endorsed by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).

CIMSPA recognise this qualification is of benefit to existing exercise and fitness instructors. Completion of this qualification will meet learner's annual 10 CPD points requirement.


Expand scope of practice

 

Learners completing the optional unit will be acknowledged with the addition of the term ‘Practitioner’ on their certificate to confirm they have demonstrated relevant skills delivering exercise for this population.

 

 

This qualification has been designed for learners who:

  • are 16+ years old
  • hold an appropriate sport/exercise or fitness qualification mapped to a CIMSPA occupational professional standard.
  • are able to communicate effectively with individuals and groups 

In order to have developed teaching skills and confidence, it is recommended that learners have at least 6 months experience planning and delivering exercise sessions before taking this qualification.
 

To achieve the YMCA Level 3 Award in Supporting Participation in Physical Activity: Older Adults, llearners must complete the following; 

  • 2 units from Group A: Underpinning knowledge 

Learners may also complete an optional unit to demonstrate their delivery skills:

  • 1 unit from Group B: Optional Unit
