    Learners must be aged 16+
    Ideally should have some experience of group or gym-based exercises as participation in a variety of practical sessions will be required throughout the qualification
    Learners should also have communication skills pitched at level 2 which can be developed during the course

    By completing this qualification, learners will meet industry requirements to become a multi-disciplined Fitness Instructor, meeting the requirements of a range of CIMSPA professional standards.

    The purpose of this qualification is to provide learners with the skills, knowledge and competence they need to follow a career as an exercise and fitness instructor.

    Learners will meet the requirements of occupational, population and environment specialisms, allowing access to jobs working in the exercise and fitness sector in a range of settings and with a range of clients. 

    Qualification Details

    Learners will cover:

    Anatomy and physiology covering:

    the heart and circulatory system
    the digestive system
    the respiratory system
    the structure and function of the skeleton
    the musculoskeletal system
    postural and core stability
    the nervous and energy systems, and their relation to exercise
    Principles of working in an exercise environment, including customer service and how to maintain health, safety and welfare.
    How to communicate with clients effectively and motivate clients to follow an exercise programme.
    Employment law, industry-specific legislation and procedures that apply to their jobs
    The subsectors that make up the active leisure and learning sector
    How to promote the health benefits of physical activity
    Understanding mental health conditions and support opportunities
    How to engage inactive people in regular physical activity
    How to identify and create opportunities for participation in sport, physical activity or wellbeing programmes within the community
    Understanding the benefits of a balanced diet and its contribution to a healthy lifestyle
    How to plan and prepare individual and or group exercise sessions
    How to programme a variety of safe and effective exercise sessions for a range of clients
    How to instruct a variety of exercise sessions with children and or adults

    To achieve the YMCA Level 2 Diploma in Exercise and Fitness Instructing (603/7285/0), learners must complete:

    210 GLH from Group A: Underpinning knowledge and skills
    A minimum of 180 GLH from all other groups
