By completing one of these qualifications, learners will meet industry requirements to become a Group Exercise Instructor, as set out within the CIMSPA professional standard.

The purpose of these qualifications is to enable learners to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours to professionally prescribe, plan and deliver safe and effective group exercise programmes within a gym, health club or outdoor environment.

Learners will study group exercise within one of seven possible disciplines, which will be listed on their certificate. Completing these qualifications allows learners to access jobs instructing group exercise classes/sessions for their chosen discipline.

Both of these qualifications are endorsed by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).

CIMSPA professional standards are employer-led and define the knowledge and skills individuals must understand and demonstrate to undertake a particular role.

YMCA Level 2 Award in Group Exercise Instructing (603/7151/1)

  • Designed for learners who are already working in the fitness sector but would like to gain new skills
  • 'Tops up' existing knowledge and skills to meet CIMSPA Core Group Exercise Instructor professional standard.

 

 

Learners must be aged 16 plus at the point of certification. Ideally learners should have some experience of participating in exercise through personal practice as they will need to take part in group exercise as part of these qualifications. Learners should also have communication skills, pitched at level 2, which can be further developed during the course.

To be eligible to complete our Level 2 Award in Group Exercise Instructing, learners must have previously completed a qualification endorsed against one of the following CIMSPA professional standards:

  • Gym Instructor
  • Core Group Exercise Instructor
  • Strength and Conditioning (Trainer).

To achieve the YMCA Level 2 Certificate in Group Exercise Instructing, learners need to achieve 4 mandatory units plus one discipline specific 'plan and deliver' units. To achieve the YMCA Level 2 Award in Group Exercise Instructing, learners need to achieve the 'Principles of planning and delivering group exercise' unit (if not previously completed as part of another qualification) and one discipline specific 'plan and deliver' unit.
